My official vote is Xenogears. However, if you're in the mood for more dungeon-crawl and less story, go for FF1. I'm not a massive fan of Square-Enix games anymore, but that didn't really kick in until FF8.

Is there any way I might suggest you try an Ultima game? They're mostly PC or really old Mac games, but there were a couple NES/SNES ports.

1) FF8 was fucking amazing and the critics agreed. No need to hate on the game where the guy gets the girl.

2) FF12 is on that list? That's odd.

3) As a man who played all of Ultima, skip it.

I didn't like FF*, but I think it's because I dropped the story somewhere in the middle and was unable to pick it back up. In a discussion the other day I Was urged to give it a replay and I may have to at some point over winter break. (Side note, the magic system DID suck in FF8. Drawing is a pain in the nuts.)
